Central Catholic won a slugfest and a pitcher’s duel Saturday to take the championship of Crawfordsville’s Athenian Invitational baseball tournament.
The Knights escaped Griffith 8-6 in the opening round, getting two doubles and two runs batted in from Dakota Skees.
Carson Barrett and Adam Dienhart had two RBI apiece to put CC in the championship game, where the Class 2A No. 1 Knights defeated 3A No. 5 Crawfordsville 4-0.
Jacob Benson tossed a complete game, allowing two hits against the Athenians. Daniel Roach added two RBI with a two-out single in the fifth inning, while Skees and Nick DeBoy each drove in a run for CC (10-4).
Crawfordsville reached the championship game with a 10-0 win over Milwaukee Riverside in which Cam Saunders allowed one hit and struck out 11 and helped his own cause with a home run and three RBI.
► Colton Thorpe‘s walk-off single capped a three-run seventh inning that gave Twin Lakes a 5-4 victory over Maconaquah to push the Indians’ win streak to five games. Thorpe and Jace Stoops each drove in two runs.
Cassidy Minniear had a huge day in Benton Central’s doubleheader sweep of Delphi. Minniear had four hits in each game, leading the Bison to 12-1 and 15-1 victories.
► Kc Clapper homered three times during Frontier’s doubleheader sweep of Lewis Cass. The Falcon senior collected four RBI in each game, leading to 10-3 and 8-6 victories. Zoey Nantkes also homered in the 10-3 win in which she went 3-for-3.
West Lafayette No. 2 singles player Evie Cai went 3-0 in the Delta Invitational, helping the Red Devils (6-2) defeat Greenfield-Central and Fort Wayne Canterbury.
Cai, who won all three of her matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores, also scored the Red Devils’ lone point in a 4-1 loss to Delta.
