FSU football will be watching one of their former on-field leaders wearing green and orange next season as an assistant for the rival Hurricanes.
(Editor’s note: Obviously, there is a decent level of sarcasm with this post because this former FSU football player has to go get a paycheck along with getting out of Ohio- so Miami fans need to realize that before letting the hate mail and tweets fly)
When you think of the great college football rivalries of the last three decades or so, the one between the Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes has to be one of the tops on that list if not the best of the best during that span. From 31 seasons between 1983 and 2013, the teams combined to win or play for the national title nearly half that span (14 seasons).
Over the time, the Seminoles would dominate their rivals on the field for a decent part of the 1990s with a former Miami quarterback – Mark Richt – leading one of the best offenses in the recent history in college football.
When Richt became the coach of his alma mater in 2016, he brought in a former FSU football star from those dynasty era teams – wide receiver Ron Dugans – to coach that position for the Canes and make Seminoles fans cringe at seeing Dugans wearing that green and orange and throwing up a “U” on social media.
Richt is gone (and Dugans is back home in Tallahassee with the Noles) but the ‘Canes are still realizing they need FSU football family members just to succeed. New head coach Manny Diaz, a Florida State grad who worked with the team, recently went back to the garnet and gold for his newest assistant coach.
The Miami Herald reported that Diaz hired Todd Stroud – who was a captain for the Seminoles in the mid 1980s and later served as a strength coach at the end of the Bobby Bowden era – as the new defensive line coach for the ‘Canes.
“We are excited to welcome Todd to The U…He knows exactly what a Miami defense looks like up front — from the weight room to the film room to the playing field.”
I’m not even mad at Diaz for making this move since he knew Stroud from the time they both worked on the staff of former FSU football assistant Chuck Amato when he was the head coach at N.C. State. No, this one is on Stroud for being a Benedict Arnold when it comes to forgetting that the orange and green and the orange and blue are off limits!
Yeah, I’ll admit that Miami is an upgrade from his former job with the Akron Zips – but there had to have been something else out there! We literally just got Dugans back over to the good side and now this takes place?!?!?!
All we can hope is that come November 2nd when Stroud and the ‘Canes make their way into Doak Campbell Stadium, he sees the error of his ways and ask Renegade for eternal forgiveness for his sin.
(All kidding aside, you want the best for all our fellow Noles – and with all that Stroud has been through, including being diagnosed with a rare disease over three years ago that initially he was given a life expectancy that he should currently be dead from before a procedure, even being alive at this point is a victory even if it means him working in Coral Gables now.)
