The 13th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard passed through Illinois on Friday, Jan. 19 to honor the Marist (Chicago, Ill.) volleyball team for its greatness in winning the IHSA Class 4A state volleyball championship and earning a No. 8 ranking in MaxPreps National Rankings.
A crowd of over 700 basketball and volleyball fanatics demonstrated once again that people follow greatness when they packed Marist’s gymnasium, to not only cheer on the Redhawk boys varsity basketball team, but to celebrate Jordan Vidovic and his fantastic girls volleyball team too.
As the volleyball celebration hit its stride just before tipoff of the basketball game, Marist’s fan base cheered and applauded as if the Redhawks had just won the state championship all over again! High-fives and handshakes were flowing, and the enthusiasm was contagious as Staff Sergeant Sandra Contreras of the Illinois Army National Guard took the microphone.
The “Minuteman” trophy represents attributes such as teamwork, dedication and commitment, among others. But tonight, SSG Contreras explained how humbled she was to present this prestigious trophy to Marist’s volleyball team. As she sees it, the Redhawks embodied the citizen soldier concept from personal courage to leadership and personal integrity. SSG Contreras then presented Vidovic, who is in his second season of coaching Marist, and the accomplished Redhawks with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy and a rafter banner to hang for generations to come.
Each time one of the girls steps back onto campus, the trophy and banner will serve as visible reminders of their greatness and of the history they made. Their legacy will long be remembered. Congratulations to the Lady Redhawks on your memorable season!!
