Sports 12 Rewind: Sulphur wins 2004 State Baseball Tournament – KXII-TV


The Sulphur Bulldogs won their first state baseball title in almost 40 years when they beat Sperry in 2004.

Sulphur beat Sperry in the 3A state championship game with Jerry Sanford as the coach.

Sulphur would put on a power display with four home runs in the game. Travis Watson and Dakota Lewis would go back to back in the third inning to put the Bulldogs out in front. Tyler Grimes and Watson would go back to back again in the 7th to put the game out of reach.

Tanner Chitwood had a tremendous game on the mound. The sophomore pitcher threw a complete game shutout, hitting the 90’s on the radar gun.

Sulphur won 6-0 at Dolese Park. it was Sulphur’s first state baseball title since 1966. They would win the state championship in football later that calendar year.
