The Diamond Heels take a tumble in the latest college baseball Top 25 polls that were released on Monday afternoon
It was a rough week for the North Carolina Tar Heels’ baseball program and it may have come at the wrong time.
The Diamond Heels entered last weekend’s road series against last place Pitt tied atop the Coastal Division with Georgia Tech. But after losing Game 1 of the series, the pressure was on and the Tar Heels split Saturday’s double-header and dropped two of the three.
UNC also lost its only non-conference game of the week against a Top 10 ranked ECU team in Chapel Hill.
Losing the series to Pitt could prove to be huge for the Tar Heels and their chances at winning the Coastal Division. It dropped them to third place and a game behind Georgia Tech for first and a half game behind Miami for second. The series loss also dropped them in the latest college baseball rankings.
The Tar Heels dropped seven spots from No. 13 to No. 20 in the latest D1Baseball Top 25 rankings that were released on Monday. It was their largest drop of the season in the rankings.
With their drop to No. 20, UNC is behind No. 6 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Louisville, No. 17 N.C. State and No. 18 Miami among Atlantic Coast Conference teams.
UNC is ranked No. 20 in the latest Baseball America poll released on Monday, dropping six spots from No. 14. Just like the D1Baseball poll, UNC is behind Georgia Tech (8), Louisville (10), N.C. State (13) and Miami (14).
The Tar Heels will wrap up regular season play this week by hosting High Point on Tuesday and then their final ACC series with N.C. State coming into Chapel Hill. UNC will need to win the series against N.C. State and hope for some help this weekend.
The 2019 ACC Tournament will take place May 21-26th in Durham. For more on the UNC Baseball program, please check back with Keeping It Heel.
